31 May، 2018Sixth International Conference Concludes its Activities
The curtain came down on Sixth International Conference: “Oman’s Relation with Indian Ocean Countries and the Gulf from Seventeenth to Ninteenth Century” at Sheikh Jaber Al Ahamed Cultural Center, Kuwait. This event was organized bt NRAA in cooperation with National Council for Culture, Arts and Literature from 11th to 13th December 2017.
The conclusion ceremony was held under auspices of H.E. Eng. Ali Husain Al-Yoha, Secretary- General of National Council for Culture, Arts and Literature in Kuwait. A short documentary film about the conference and the accompanied records exhibition was played during the ceremony along with honoring researchers participated in the conference.
At the end of the conference sessions, the conference committee issued a number of recommendations including the need for further studies and researches on the relations between the Gulf States and the Indian Ocean before seventeenth century, the establishment of a center to study the relations between the Gulf States and the Indian Ocean countries, and the establishment of a database on the relations between Oman, Gulf countries and the Indian Ocean in cooperation with the competent scientific bodies in those countries. The participants also recommended the inclusion of subjects in school curricula dealing with the relations between the Gulf States and the Indian Ocean countries throughout the ages within the programs of teaching in educational institutions at various stages and levels and directing postgraduate students and researchers to prepare studies on the relations between the Gulf States and the Indian Ocean countries. The conference also called for the convening of conferences and seminars calling for integration between the Gulf states and the Indian Ocean countries and the need to achieve security and peaceful coexistence, establish the tolerance principles and coexistence values and renounce all extremism manifestations.
During the conference events and under the third economic and social theme, the first session started discussing “the commercial and cultural activities of Muscat port between the Gulf ports and the ports of the Indian Ocean” delivered by researcher Ismail Al-Zadjali, followed by a paper by Kuwaiti researcher Alaa Al-Mansour entitled “Political, Economic and Social Relations between Kuwait and Oman (1841 – 1939)”. Then, the conference moved to fourth Literary, Linguistic and Cultural theme starting with a paper entitled “The Strategic Role of Oman in Promoting Peace and Cultural Renaissance in the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Gulf during the Seventeenth and Nineteenth Centuries” by the Tunisian professor Al-Mayzori, followed by a paper entitled “Omani Sailors and the Historical Impact on Cultural Practices in the Arabian Gulf” by Dr. Aisha Bulkhir from UAE.
In addition, researcher Wardah Al-Busaidi presented a paper on “Traditional Omani and Indian Costumes: Common Features between the 17th and 18th Centuries”. The session ended with a paper dealing with “the Omani Empire: International Maritime Leadership and the Great Historical Links with Ancient Civilizations in the Period 1880-1910” delivered by Dr. Dherar Al-Mawla. The second session, on the fourth theme, started with a paper by Mohammed Saray entitled “The Methodology of the Ancient Omani and Yemeni Historians in their Writings on the Portuguese” and then by Dr. Ahmed Al-Saidi from delivered “Oman, India and the Gulf. Then, Farid Ahmed presented a study on “the Role of the British Administration in the Development of Some Infrastructure Projects in Oman during the Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries”. Dr. Mohamed Abdelmoumen expolred how Oman and the Arabian Gulf were depicted in the French report of Untonan Gogiar in 1899. The last session of the conference concluded with a paper presented by researcher Belal entitled “Oman’s External Relations with India and Iran”.
