About the Authority

The President's Message

The government has given great attention to documents due to their importance in national memory. For the first time, legal texts have been issued in this field, forming the foundation for records and archives and establishing the National Records and Archives Authority to carry out its assigned tasks. It has been preparing specialists to provide support to all relevant entities in building a modern document management system, from its inception in government units to its final outcome, which will either be permanent preservation at the Authority as part of the national heritage or destruction. Since its establishment, the Authority has been able to achieve the following: - Preparing specialists and building their self-capacity by implementing a comprehensive educational program to obtain a diploma and bachelor's degree. - Establishing document departments in various government units. - Beginning to build the system in several entities, and with coordination with several government agencies, the Authority has completed the system in 25 government entities. - The Authority has initiated the development of the shared document system, which covers similar topics such as the activities of government unit heads' offices, financial, human, and material resources. There is no benefit in building these common aspects with each unit individually. The Authority expects to complete this system within a year. This includes preparing a comprehensive indexing of document types and files handled in these areas, assigning classification systems, and retention schedules. Once this system is completed, the types of files to be transferred to the Authority's building will be determined. The designs for this building are in progress, and its construction is expected to finish with the completion of the system's foundational stage, estimated to take four years. - The Authority has started collecting documents concerning the Sultanate from international archives and document centers. This phase may take several years, as the Authority has been able to identify foreign institutions and establish necessary communications to acquire collections of documents related to the Sultanate.
