The National Records and Archives Authority has published the book “Musandam in the Memory of Omani History” in English as the seventh volume in the Historical and Cultura Series on Omani Governorates and Cities. The book consists of 350 pages and includes ten research papers addressing various aspects of the history and civilization of Musandam Governorate, covering historical, geographical, economic, social, and cultural topics.
The book highlights the historical role played by Musandam Governorate throughout its long history and the impact of that role on the history of the governorate in particular and Omani history in general. It also sheds light on the significant contributions made by the people of the governorate to the history of Oman and the valuable efforts they have exerted—and continue to exert—for the progress and prosperity of the Sultanate, alongside Omanis in different parts of Oman. Mainly, the book is a production of reviews and studies of a collection of documents, books, manuscripts, and narratives related to the civilizational history of Musandam. It also includes an appendix containing selected documents, photographs, and maps related to Musandam Governorate, chosen from the documentary holdings of the National Records and Archives Authority.
This publication reflects the Authority’s belief in the importance of highlighting the cultural, historical, scientific, and civilizational aspects of the Sultanate of Oman as an extended empire across its various regions, as well as through its governorates and cities that embrace diverse aspects of its heritage. These are represented in its geographical locations, distinctive coasts rich with villages and towns, diverse maritime trade routes, and cultural connections with commercial and economic centers to the east, west, north, and south. It also highlights the inland cities characterized by different forms of livelihood—most notably agriculture and mining—as well as desert towns and villages that formed routes for overland caravan communication with neighboring countries bordering the Sultanate of Oman.
The book also represents the vision of the National Records and Archives Authority in preserving the rich Omani heritage and aligns with its strategic objectives of encouraging scientific research in various civilizational fields, in addition to highlighting the historical and cultural aspects of Omani governorates and cities. It focuses on Musandam Governorate and its four wilayats: Khasab, Dibba, Bukha, and Madha.
The ten research papers included in the book vary in subject matter, covering historical, geographical, economic, social, and cultural themes. This diversity in topics, sources, and research methodologies enriches the academic value of the book.
