Sayyid Haitham bin Tariq al- Said, Supervisor Minister of the National Record and Archives Authority (NRAA) approved the decision No. 1/2015 issued on November 10th 2015, related to defining fees for the services provided by NRAA. Dr. Hamad bin Mohammed Al-Dhoyani, Chairman of NRAA, also approved the decision No. 292/2015 dated November 10th 2015 about activating the regulations and procedures for accessing NRAA’s records.
This step taken as NRAA’s intension to encourage scientific research and to highlight the cultural and scientific importance of archives along with facilitating access to records. In fact, NRAA already started receiving users at Access Room on Access to Records Department. Users are now able to search and access to records and even having copies related to their interests. NRAA actually taken a further step by facilitating exploring the available files online at www.nraa.gov.om . This link also enables users to register and complete personal details before visiting NRAA along with other options. Users can visit NRAA during office hours to register as a user and to be introduced to NRAA’s archives search engine. In addition, users will gain access to NRAA’s library to benefit from its paper and electronic resources and books.
Regulations and Procedures for Accessing NRAA’s Records
Users can search for references using computers at Reading Room and can be assisted by staff. Also, they can use paper search tools available at the room. A user cannot ask for more than 4 files a day and shall not access more than a file at one time. Users should be responsible for file while reading and should return it back before asking for another one. Any destruction, damage or disorder in files should be reported to the staff of the Reading Room.
Regulations of NRAA’s access to records states that a user can reserve a file for two days. It also offers a copy request form that allows users to obtain copies of any record to serve research purposes. NRAA stresses that users are not allowed to use copies for commercial purposes unless there is a written confirmation issued by it. Moreover, users shall get requested paper or electronic copies of records after applying for it and paying the fees.
